Bruce Dale Photography

Bruce Dale has created a beautiful landscape of the Chama Railroad in New Mexico. The movement of the train keeps you wondering and wanting to know where the train will lead to next. The colors are vibrant and very seasoned and the rolling hills are everlasting. I would very much like to create images like this with beautiful natural colors.

Michael Nickols Wildlife Photographer

Chimpanzee Confiscated From Hunters
Monrovia, Liberia, 1989

Nicohls found this baby, frightened and confused, in a tiny zoo. The zookeeper, a teacher, meant well but was overwhelmed and had little or no funding. Later this zoo was destroyed by civil war and the animals killed and eaten.

This picture is so nice and makes me want to see animals rescued like this. The image is in a sense rescued and trapped at the same time. It is such a sad picture and the story behind it is even sadder. But I would like to see myself capture more emotional images like this one. The composition is powerful and very compelling to the viewer.

Ansel Adams, Monolith, The Face of Half Dome, Yosemite National Park, California. 1927

Bowers Museum of Cultural Art
The black and white lines throughout the image are very straight and they keep your eye moving, also the use of negative space in the image keeps you focused on the structure of the dome.

Octopus, Tim Hawkinson 2006
Photographic collage mounted on foam
The Getty Museum, Los Angeles
Hawkinson uses detail fo human anatomy to create his pictures. To create the suckers on the octopus he uses his mouth and lips to make them look llike the actual suckers of an octopus. With the use of photography Hawkinson manipulates the images into a collage t create a visually stimulating image.

Paul Nicklen- Balboa Park, The Natural History Museum
April 20 -

He has beautiful images with beautiful composition. I especially like the Leopard Seal that is posted at the Museum. The image is a seal on the ice and you can see the mountain in the background covered in snow and under the water. Not too many photographers create stunning images like this one. Paul Nicklen has many images on his site that are just as beautiful as this one.

The color in this image shows off his powerful use of underwater photography with the land use. Very eye catching!

Polar Bears, Ralph Lee Hopkins Balboa Park, The Natural History Museum
Such a pure picture of a mom and bear cub on the ice. The image in nearly all white except for the two bears walking away. This picture was something that I would definetly see in my personal collection....if I could afford it. I think they were asking $1500 for this print.

Yosemite Falls [03-93] John D. Clark<, The Ordover Gallery
John Clark produced an image in black and white of Yosemite Falls and showed great depth with his use of black and white. The image is very detailed and intricate to the point that it keeps you interested. The lines througout the image makes your eye wander and reveal things that you normally wouldn't focus on.

March 5 @ 7pm- Arts 111
Locally Grown Dance Series -SDSU faculty in choreography and they present fresh dance works that are modern and youthful. There was one lady at the end that was absolutely hilarious and she showed dance and the kitchen in her choreography. She was throwing Cheetos everywhere and yelling phrases throughout her performance that no one could understand. She was great.

Feb. 6 @ 7pm- Arts 111
Lux Boreal A Tijuana based dance group. They were the best dancers that I have seen, showing great rhythum and beats with their movement. For modern dance this will definetly keep you intrigued and interested throughout the whole performance. They used red tables as props and danced around them and over them throughout the whole performace. The music was very motivating also.http://www.luxboreal.com/

March 26 @ 8pm - Arts 111
North County North County, a play about a “side of life in North San Diego County rarely seen or discussed, inspired by the Al Norte de San Diego Latino History Project interviews. The play captures the many diverse and unique communities that reside in north county. It is a play about culture, clashes, commerce, dreams and desires.

March 12 @ 10am- Arts 111
Inside the Conductors jacket: Jung Ho Pak
A San Diego Chamber Orchestra Artistic Director and Conductor showed us his inspiring ways to introduce and perform in front of an audience. The arts have a big inpact on the audience and how we perceive classical music. He makes things more modern and interesting for younger audiences. He was also very passionate about his line of work which made it very interesting to listen to him talk. He also discussed the pep talks that he gives his musicians and how to inspire them to make things more interesting and involved as a whole group.

Feb. 15 @7pm- CSUSM Arts 111
Katsura Kan-

Katsura Kan is a Master Butoh artist and his students performed a dance series that is considered a revolutionary dance which emerged from the Post WWII Japan. Katsura describes it as "surrealism of the flesh". This wasn't your typical dance, but it was very interpretive and very unusual to me. The dancers were performing acts like they were coming out of a wound and they were acting like animals and I found this pretty unusual for dance.

Feb 26 @ 7pm- CSUSM Arts 111
Hobey Ford
Hobey Ford is knows as a puppeteer and he created all of his puppets by sculpting them out of foam and other materials. This was the most interesting event that I have seem yet. He showed the movements that the puppets can take on and how the are manipulated by the hand to seem realistic. He had marionetts, "Foamies" and shadow puppetry. He was also the creator of the Peepers and he showed us some great moves to inspire children in their world of learning.

Terrilynn Quick

Visiting artist to demonstrate altered books

Seeing Terrilynns books was interesting and very inspiring. Her book with the maps was one that stuck out the most for me. I enjoyed the colorful pages that were painted on the maps, it created a bit of depth for the pages and made the book more interesting to look at.

Spring Break!

I have finished my book and I am making some final touches to the pages. I actually like my book and am enjoying making this one.

Also, my altered book is done! I painted my book and made the paint spill over the pages like the visions of every page. Each page is filled with different colors and they represent the different representations throughout the whole book. I even made another book that consisted of folded pages. I really like this one better because it has cleaner lines and a different look.

Pages 2-3

Oliver Herring

Oliver Herring created art by having people blow food coloring out of their mouths and photographing the results in the end.

His images were very colorful and it showed the lines and structure in ones face and the looks on the person is very empowering.

Saed Meshki

Another Typographer with great images in their layouts. Great usage of balancing images and use of space. The layouts are really eye catching and hold great visual interest.

Reza Abedini

A graphic artist that specializes in Typography. He uses clean lines and a lot of negative space. The negative space that is used is very nicely done and looks like a refreshing layout that is something that I would like to resemble in my book. He also uses a lot of shilouettes in his layouts, which is somewhat what I will be doing also.

Arturo Herrera

Arturo Herrera said that the camera lens is like a blade that cuts from his own drawings.

His idea of taking images and then dipping the film in water and letting the water seep in was a cool idea. I wonder how it would look in color.

Tom O. Scott

The works by Tom Scott are a piece of work in its self. Its actually amazing what you find once you open your eyes and allow yourself to imagine an image made solely in sand.

He photographs the beach sand and how the ocean brings in the black sand and mixes together to create an almost illustrated photograph that makes you wonder if they actually do exist at the coast.

He also photographs driftwood and shows the different textures found on them. The images tend to have tree like images and images of movement throughout them.

I actually want to take a trip to the beach to see if I can find images as his on the coast.

Sarah Moon

Sarah Moon was a photographer born in 1941 in France. She focused on a lot of fashion photography and the face of a human being. The face, profile, back, and perspective were all important things to consider in photography and were always incorporated into the works that she took. Being a photographer had an added value, and created a pure fiction among the pictures that were taken. Her image of the peacock spreading its feathers was very beautiful and you end up appreciating it because you don't get to see that beauty everyday.

"The world of fashion with its real fakes."
"Just a Polaroid to catch a glimpse of the fugitive."

As the Pages Turn....

My project that I am looking to create is going to be about the creations and drawings that are apart of my life. I have been drawing for many years now and I don't have them all in the same place, so creating a book with my images will be very rewarding to me. I will be scanning the drawings in and creating a book of my drawings as my personal portfolio. This will also be a nice thing that I can pass on to other people.

The images are all in black and white and show human figures in movement. They tend to be repetitive and detailed. I will incorporate text with the images and more or less show a word that I feel describes the images that were drawn.

Stefan Sagmeister

Stefan Sagmeister was a graphic designer that focused on Typography. He also designed album covers for famous bands like Lou Reed, the Rolling Stones, David Byrne, Aerosmith and Pat Metheny.

Its kind of funny because when he had to look for fonts he was bored with them when he had to flip through them and now he is creating fonts for people that will last forever.

The image above was done by cutting all of the type onto Sagmeister's own body with an X-Acto knife, the photographic it.

Photography

I just got out of my photography class and we explored the photos from all over. We mostly focused on Dorothea Lange's "Migrant Mother". We discussed how you can see her emotion in her face, and the clothing that she wears shows her poverty level/social class. The image is powerful and it really shows her desperation.

Candidates

The election is coming and the deadline is nearing for us all. Many things are going through my mind about who to choose and why I should choose them. The candidates have great aspirations for our country, but the big question is....who should I chose. I guess I'll sleep on it.

Drive Time

The weekend is coming and we are headed to Arizona for a long overdue drive. We are going to visit family and spend some quality time together. Can't Wait!!

Rainy Days Beauty

Today the rain brought on a a beautiful view from our house and from our work window, a huge rainbow from end to end. The view was spectacular and one of a kind. I wish I had my camera with me at the time and that I wasn't in such a hurry to start my day. It's not often that we get to stop and enjoy the scenery anymore.

David Carson

David Carson is a well know typographer and shows it in his works. He helped people to be able to look beyond the grid lines and push the envelope a little bit. He talked about the energy of the text and that the words don't express the meaning, that the message comes from what is made.

As a local artist David Carson brought on a new look into typography and the expression of the media. He is a creative artist that makes that specific industry evolve into a new distinctive design era.
